A new stadium in central Auckland will not receive government funding, according to New Zealand Prime Minister Bill English, reports the NZ Herald. A feasibility study ordered by Auckland Mayor Phil Goff for a central stadium, which could cost up to an estimated NZ$1bn (US$694m), had previously put the beleaguered project back on track. However, the government’s position to rule out any funding suggests that the project remains far from a top priority. Alternative funds will have to be secured if the project is to progress.
