The Miami-Dade board of county commissioners has voted to approve the sale of a 3-acre parcel of land to David Beckham’s Miami MLS ownership group.
The area of land now means that Beckham’s group, Miami Beckham United, has sufficient land to build a privately financed 25,000-seat stadium for use by the proposed MLS expansion team.
Although there are still various permissions that must be obtained before construction can begin, the sale of the land marks a significant milestone in Beckham’s attempts to bring a Miami MLS team to the league. When he signed for LA Galaxy in 2007, Beckham’s contract included a clause that would give him the right to start an expansion side for US$25m.
