Jakarta’s Gelora Bung Karno Stadium will be refurbished ahead of the 2018 Asian Games, reports the Jakarta Globe. The 90,000-seat stadium will host the opening and closing ceremonies, and renovation work, which is currently underway, will continue until October 2017.
The stadium is being fitted with a new lighting system, and the pitch will be re-laid ahead of the international event. Previously used long benches in the stadium’s grandstand will also be removed. Gelora Bung Karno Stadium is one of the largest soccer venues in the world, and has hosted a variety of international sporting events since it opened in 1962.
