English Premier League club Chelsea FC has been granted permission by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan to build a new 60,000-seat stadium. The £500m (US$607m) stadium has been designed by Herzog & de Meuron and will replace the club’s existing Stamford Bridge facility.
The new stadium’s design features a circular steel ring supported by 264 brick pillars. The three-tier seating bowl design will provide excellent sightlines and improve access – the stadium’s child seating sections and disabled supporters sections will be significantly larger than at the old Stamford Bridge. The stadium will be funded by the club’s owner, Roman Abramovich.
The club remains in negotiations for a stadium to host its home matches while work takes place, after plans to relocate the team to Twickenham Stadium fell through.
