The 2017 MLS season will welcome two new expansion clubs in Atlanta United and Minnesota United FC, with both teams hoping to become the first expansion club to win the MLS Cup in its inaugural year since the Chicago Fire last accomplished the feat in 1998.
Atlanta United will play at Bobby Dodd Stadium, before moving to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium when the state-of-the-art venue opens in July. The 83,000-seat capacity of the new stadium will, most likely, be reduced to 40,000 for MLS games.
Minnesota United FC will join the MLS after six years in the NASL, allowing the team to easily transition a group of core group players into MLS. Initially playing home games at National Sports Center in Blaine, Minnesota, the team will move into a new US$200m, 21,500-seat stadium in 2018.
