The city of Los Angeles in California has agreed a deal with the IOC to host the Summer Olympic Games in 2028, forgoing an earlier bid for the 2024 Games – which will be held in Paris, France.
The deal sees the Olympics return to the USA for the first time since 2002. An announcement for the 2024 and 2028 Games had been expected later this year, but the IOC reached an agreement that saw Los Angeles drop its candidacy for the earlier Games, leaving Paris as the host city.
The IOC will also contribute US$1.8bn to the Organising Committee for the 2028 Games. Los Angeles officials were quick to point to the advantages of the longer preparation period, which include more time to prepare facilities, and to increase participation and access to youth sports programs during the years leading up to the Games.
