As construction of the venues for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar continue, a leading FIFA spokesman has warned audiences at the World Stadium Congress in Doha of the dangers of ‘white elephant’ facilities, reports Al Bawaba.
Jürgen Müller, the head of planning and infrastructure at FIFA and the 2022 World Cup, made the comments during a talk at the World Stadium Congress. Although his comments were not directly aimed at the Qatari construction projects, Müller took the opportunity to issue the following advice: “Don’t build stadia that will not be filled by your leagues or your teams. FIFA would like to avoid, by all means, white elephants.”
To combat such an outcome, the Doha authorities have already outlined a number of legacy plans for the country’s new stadia, ensuring the facilities remain in use beyond the tournament in 2022.
