Following record crowds this year at Edgbaston Stadium, it has been announced that the cricket venue will increase its capacity in 2020 for major matches.
Edgbaston will construct a temporary stand at the 25,000-capacity venue for next summer’s major fixtures including an England Test Match against the West Indies, Vitality Blast Finals Day, and a ODI against Ireland – all of which have seen sell-out ticket sales or higher than expected uptake.
The installation of a temporary stand at the Birmingham-based venue will make it the UK’s largest cricket ground outside of London.
“2019 was a truly record-breaking year for cricket on and off the field and I’m sure this summer will live long in all sports fans’ memories,” said Alex Perkins, head of commercial at Edgbaston Stadium.
“Attendances, viewing figures and engagement rose significantly and we’re delighted to have seen that impact at Edgbaston. We’re very proud to host the biggest games at Edgbaston and we’re delighted to welcome the world champions back to a ground where they’ll have very fond memories.”
