Clarkson University in Postdam, New York, is currently giving its Cheel Campus Center and Arena a modernization that will update the building’s infrastructure and expand its footprint to add more state-of-the-art features.
Opened in 1991, the ice hockey arena is home to its Golden Knights and is going through a dramatic overhaul to its facilities. Jud Mills, clerk of works, plant operations and maintenance talks through the project, including the latest progress with the arena bowl and locker rooms.
“We’ve removed all the existing concrete, we removed the existing piping, and once that’s out we’ll start putting the new systems in. That’ll be happening in the next few weeks.
“In the locker room area all the block walls have been installed and metal framing is in, dividing all the different training areas.
“We’ve had a few scheduling snafus here and there but that happens with construction.”
When all phases are completed, more than 30,000 square feet will be added to the building. The project will be implemented over several construction phases to ensure the space is at least partially functional at all times. The entire facility is expected to be completed before April 1, 2020.
