Serie A soccer team Empoli has taken to Twitter to unveil plans for upgrades to its Stadio Carlo Castellani. At present, Empoli’s arena holds fewer than 20,000 spectators, but renovations will thoroughly modernize the ground, completely enclosing the pitch and closing up the open corners.
Empoli chief executive Francesco Ghelfi spoke of potential problems between the club and the municipality (which owns the ground) regarding the removal of the athletics track, but highlighted the importance of the refurbishment when he spoke to Sky Sport Italia. “If the Municipality stops investing in the stadium, there will be much bitterness; their denial would reflect a lot about their desire to continue supporting us,” he explained. “The stadium deserves an upgrade and it will cost under €10.5m (US$11.7m).”
