Refurbishment of the Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi has suffered setbacks and will now not be completed until November, reports Inside The Games.
The stadium, which was the focal point of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, is one of the 12 venues specified in Russia’s 2018 FIFA World Cup plans, and is also scheduled to host games during the 2017 Confederations Cup. Refurbishment of the stadium will increase capacity to more than 47,000. Russian Sports Minister Lyudmilla Chernova revealed the revised schedule to Russian news agency TASS, but did not offer an explanation for the delay.
The delay follows news that the cost of the 69,000-seat Zenit Arena in St Petersburg may now exceed US$1bn. Officials insist, however, that the venue will be completed by the end of 2016.
