The €400m (US$433.9m) Parc Olympique Lyonnais, France’s first fully privately financed stadium, has been completed on schedule in Décines. The new stadium welcomed visitors with a Ligue 1 match between home soccer team Olympique Lyonnais and Troyes.
With a capacity of 59,186 seats, the stadium will host matches during the 2016 European Championships soccer tournament and the 2016 European Rugby Cup finals. The stadium’s capacity is adjustable, making the venue suitable for concerts. A state-of-the-art training ground, hotel and a leisure area (which will house a sports museum, club shop and high-class brasserie) are also included in the stadium complex.
For the past three years, Mott MacDonald has acted as technical advisor to the project’s lenders. The consultancy has supported development of the stadium throughout its lifecycle, performing technical due diligence and also providing an independent review of the business plan. Once the project moved from financial stages into construction, Mott MacDonald offered continuous and extensive monitoring services to help keep the stadium’s delivery on time and budget. Mott MacDonald will continue to monitor operations in an ongoing role.
“We have been involved on this project, alongside Olympique Lyonnais and their lenders, since the very beginning and have played an instrumental role in making the deal bankable and securing the necessary financing,” says Erwann Pile, Mott MacDonald project director.
“This new generation stadium will be fully connected digitally and feature new technological innovations, such as an internet protocol television system which will run on 300 screens, offering a unique spectator experience.”
