The University of Minnesota has announced that its new US$190m, 340,000ft2 Athletics Village will be constructed by Mortenson.
Facilities will include a Center for Excellence, which will house academic, leadership and nutrition centers, a Football Performance Center, Football Indoor Practice Facility and a Basketball Development Center.
Of the total US$190m project cost, US$70m has so far been raised via private contributions. Pre-construction work will begin immediately, with Mortenson joining the the university’s architectural team, led by BWBR Architects.
“Announcing our construction partner is an exciting milestone,” said director of athletics Norwood Teague. “From the first day we shared plans for this project, we have been working against a very aggressive timeline to get these badly needed facilities built.”
Teague first announced these new facilities in July 2013. Once construction is completed, the Athletics Village will include an expanded academic center, a leadership center dedicated to student-athlete development, a nutrition center to house a dining hall and wellness programming, and training and indoor practice spaces for several Gopher programs. Existing buildings will be updated for use by other Gopher athletic programs.
