The iconic Georgia Dome in Atlanta is scheduled for demolition before January 2018. The arena was built in 1992 for a then US$214m and was home to NFL team the Atlanta Falcons before the club took the decision to build a new venue, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Demolition of the dome will be completed before college football’s national championship game comes to the new Falcons stadium in January of 2018, AJC reports.
Representatives of the construction team working on the Mercedes-Benz Stadium told the Georgia World Congress Center Authority board that a demolition contractor is being selected, with material salvage due to begin in March next year. Implosion of the dome will take place by autumn 2017.
