The Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, home to Spanish La Liga soccer side Athletico Madrid, has been given a number of accolades since opening in 2017, and most recently was named the best stadium in the world by the World Football Summit.
Designed by Spanish architects Cruz y Ortiz, the 68,000-seater Wanda Metropolitano was given the distinction at the WFS industry awards held in Madrid in September, beating out competition from the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta and CenturyLink Field in Seattle.
“Among the considerations that have led the jury to award this prize are its remarkable design, the operation during matchdays, its ability to hold other major events, as well as the high technological development of this facility, and above all, a unique experience for the spectator in terms of comfort, services and safety,” Cruz y Ortiz Architects said in a press release.
