The details and whereabouts of the stadium for David Beckham’s Miami Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise have remained an unknown ever since it was awarded a place in the league back in January this year.
However, the wait may finally be over for fans agonizing over what the new home of Miami soccer will look like and where it will be located after the group behind the franchise announced plans to unveil a stadium development proposal at the Melreese Golf Course.
A report in the Miami Herald revealed the news that original plans to build at a site in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood have now shifted to the publicly owned golf course where it is expected that the group will reveal a plan for a larger complex alongside the stadium, with space for a hotel, retail, tech hub and public soccer pitches.
Following the report, Jorge Mas, a local businessman who is part of the group behind the Miami MLS future expansion, took to Twitter to confirm the upcoming announcement:
“Big news & reveal coming soon with what will be a transformational world class park, soccer village, and tech hub for #OurMiami. A global symbol of the cultural mosaic that is our great city.”
In order for the plans to be given the green light, they will need the public vote, and before that happens the project will need to be included as a ballot item on political elections in November – something that will need to be signed off at a commissioners’ meeting on either July 12 or July 26.
To meet this deadline, the report claims the Beckham group has enlisted Miami-based Arquitectonica to create conceptual renderings for the first public reveal.
The Miami franchise will begin play in the MLS in 2020 at a temporary stadium while its permanent home, wherever that may be, is scheduled to open in 2021.
