David Beckham’s dream of building a stadium in Miami, Florida, has moved one step closer after city commissioners approved plans on July 18 for Freedom Park, which will now go to public vote in November.
The new Major League Soccer (MLS) expansion team presented its vision for building a multi-purpose facility, including a 25,000-seater stadium, community soccer pitches and hotel rooms, on the site of the Melreese Country Club, currently the city’s only public golf course. The MLS club hopes to open the doors to a brand-new home by 2021.
Following a Miami City Commission vote of 3-2 in favor of holding a referendum, a vote will take place in November asking the public whether the Beckham Group’s bid to lease the 58-acre plot of land should be allowed to waive the city’s normal competitive bidding procedures governing building on public land.
Should voters approve, the plan will then go back to city commissioners who will have to agree on the final details of the lease agreement.
