One of the largest video screens in UK sport is being installed at the home of Wasps’ rugby club, the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.
As part of a new digital strategy driven by fan demand, the club has invested in the new LED screen, which measures 2,023ft² (188m²) and has a 10mm pixel pitch, making it one of the highest resolution screens in the country.
The new super wide display, which is larger than displays found at stadia such as Twickenham in London and Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland, is being installed at the South Stand by technology provider ADI and will offer a clearer delivery of replays, match information, social media and interactive fan content.
“We’ve responded to fans requesting better quality screens by installing one of the largest state-of-the-art pieces of technology in UK sport,” said Stuart Cain, commercial director for Wasps and the Ricoh Arena.
“This will massively improve people’s experience when watching Wasps. We’ve also invested in the main atrium which will improve the experience for the 700,000 people visiting conferences and exhibitions at the Ricoh Arena every year.”
As well as the main display, the Ricoh Arena will also install new screens outside the stadium bowl, while also introducing high density wi-fi to allow up to 20,000 people to log on at the same time, and a new ticketing system technology where fans can see 3D previews from their seat choice before purchase.
“We’ve known that we needed to improve the online ticketing experience for a while but had to see out an existing contract. The new system is used at some of the world’s best venues, including The O2 in London, and by NBA teams such as the Cleveland Cavaliers,” said Cain.
“When you add up the new screens, app, high-density wi-fi, contactless technology, and new ticketing and retail websites then it makes Wasps and the Ricoh Arena one of the most digitally connected venues in the UK if not Europe,” Cain added.
“Staying ahead of the game is crucial for Wasps when trying to give fans the digital experience they demand both online, at the stadium and through their mobile.”
