Last month’s poll question asked whether large operational groups with multiple stadia and arenas in their portfolios are doing enough to address sustainability issues, or should the onus lie with individual venues to reduce their environmental footprint?
The question was posed in light of an announcement from John Marler, vice president of energy and environment at AEG (which operates a number of sports and entertainment venues around the world), outlining the company’s ambitious goals to reduce greenhouse emissions, water use and waste across the group’s facilities.
After the end of voting, 45% of respondents believe that facilities should not be held responsible, and that sports governing bodies and national governments should be taking the initiative in this regard.
Of the remaining voters, 27% believe that large operators and corporations should be charged with implementing widespread initiatives across their stadia and arenas, and 27% responded that individual sports facilities, regardless of size, should be taking the lead in terms of sustainability.
