Las Vegas Stadium, which will be the new US$1.9bn home of the NFL’s Raiders and UNLV’s Rebels when constructed in 2020, will be supported by 10,000 tons of steel from fabricator Merrill Steel.
The manufacturer will provide and install roughly one third of the total structural steel to be used at the state-of-the-art, 65,000-seat (expandable to 72,000) venue, which will be located off the famous Las Vegas Strip.
Having already supplied steel for big stadium projects such as Mercedes-Benz Stadium and Allianz Field and a recent football stadium expansion at the University of Notre Dame, Merrill Steel has said Las Vegas Stadium will be the biggest order in its history.
The challenge to produce the required amount of steel by July 2019 is said to consume the entire production floor at its Springfield, Missouri, plant.
“It’s great for the community, great for Merrill. It means an increase in jobs. We have a great team here, and we’re always looking for more,” said plant manager Greg Rajeck.
“This is a complete turnkey project for us,” added Merrill Steel president Fred Schwalbach. “Starting with the completion of the design. Rolling into the production of the shop drawings. We will fabricate the steel, drill it, cut it, weld it and finish paint. That will all occur right here on-site.”
