The Luzhniki Stadium in Russia, the centerpiece venue for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, has been awarded a certificate from international green standard BREEAM for its sustainability and energy conservation.
Having completed a major renovation last year, the stadium incorporated sustainability and environmental efficiency throughout the design and construction. A modern heating and cooling system that can be constantly controlled to save energy was installed, and the use of LED lighting, water-saving technology and the planting of 1,050 trees and bushes surrounding the venue all contributed to the award.
As part of FIFA’s World Cup Sustainability Strategy, every stadium designated to host a game must pass a mandatory level of sustainable standards. Apart from the Luzhniki, the Spartak Stadium and Kazan Arena both received BREEAM certification from.
“Stadiums are key in our efforts to stage a successful and more sustainable FIFA World Cup, which is why FIFA has made green certification mandatory for all arenas used for the event,” said FIFA head of sustainability and diversity Federico Addiechi.
“I am very glad to see that three of the 2018 FIFA World Cup stadiums have already successfully achieved their sustainable certification following Russian as well as international green building standards.”
