Tottenham Hotspur has announced that its new state-of-the-art stadium will boast an official capacity of 62,062 after an application to increase the original number of seats was approved by Haringey Council.
The new stadium, which is being built on the site of the old White Hart Lane ground, was initially to have 61,559 seats. It will be the second highest-capacity soccer club stadium in London, behind West Ham United’s London Stadium (although, licensing regulations at the London Stadium means capacity is currently restricted to 57,000 on match days), and the capital’s fourth largest sports stadium, behind Wembley and Twickenham.
The stadium, due to be completed for the start of the 2018 English Premier League Season, was originally estimated to cost £400m (US$550m), but the final bill is expected to pass £1bn (US$1.38bn).
Having recently announced that the stadium will be selling its naming rights, however, the club expects to recoup a large portion of the costs.
