Oklahoma State football is going big in 2018 with the installation of a brand-new video board that will be one of the biggest in college football.
A vast display measuring 110ft wide and 56ft tall will loom over the east end zone of the Boone Pickens Stadium at Oklahoma State University (OSU) where Cowboys fans around the venue will be able see live action, replays, stats and other scores around the league in full high-definition.
Funding for the new Daktronics video board, which ranks as the eighth largest at a college-only football stadium, was raised entirely privately with no expense to the taxpayer and construction has already begun to prepare for its arrival in July.
“This board not only modernizes the game-day experience in Boone Pickens Stadium, but it also brings Oklahoma State to the forefront in this area,” said athletic director Mike Holder.
“We have taken input from fans and I believe that adding a premium board like this is a game-changer for all of us who attend Cowboy football games.”
The video board will be attached to the outside wall of OSU’s Gallagher-Iba Arena, which hosts its basketball and wrestling. However due to the fact that the board will be facing into the sun in the west, it boasts 11,000 cd/m² of brightness (most boards usually register 7,000 cd/m²) in order for image clarity.
What also makes OSU’s new video board stand out from those at other football stadiums is its location.
“The recent trend is that video boards in college football stadiums are getting bigger and bigger, but what sets this particular one apart is the fact that it’s so close to the field,” said Daktronics’ Perry Grave.
“This board is not on top of the upper deck, far away from the action. It’s much closer. The quality of the board, combined with its proximity to the field, will give fans a much larger, brighter and better picture.”
