More than 200 new high-tech security cameras have been installed at the University of Phoenix Stadium as the retractable Glendale dome gets ready to host the Super Bowl on February 1.
The Arizona Sports & Tourism Authority has contracted a Vancouver, British Columbia-based supplier to deploy surveillance cameras and other new high-tech security equipment at the 1.7 million-square-foot stadium. The contract totals US$910,000.
The new systems also includes security control software, better facial identification and quicker search and operational speeds. UOP Stadium general manager Peter Sullivan said the new system gives high-definition, detailed shots of fans and stadium areas.
Security will be high following the NFL’s decision to step up security searches and rules in 2013 after the Boston Marathon bombings. Some streets will close or restricted around the stadium on Super Bowl Sunday. Tailgating will be restricted and private buses and shuttles won’t be able to get near the stadium area.
