English soccer club AFC Wimbledon has received a boost to its plans for a new stadium in southwest London. The application for an 11,000-seat stadium on the site of the Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium was approved by the local council almost a year ago, but has been beset by delays.
Former London Mayor Boris Johnson decided to review the case following objections from neighboring Wandsworth Council. Recently appointed Mayor Sadiq Khan handed powers back to the local authority, but Wandsworth Council invited the UK’s Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Sajid Javid, to intervene.
The club has now learned that such intervention will not take place, with Javid happy for local authorities to rule on the proposed stadium. AFC Wimbledon’s new stadium will have an initial capacity of 11,000, with expansion plans to increase that figure to 20,000.
