The Japanese government has approved a US$1.5bn plan for construction of the main stadium for Tokyo’s 2020 Olympic Games, reports ABC News.
The much-delayed project was the subject of intense media scrutiny after a design by the late Zaha Hadid was deemed too expensive and unpopular. A new design from Kengo Kuma comes in under the proposed budget, and is expected to be completed by November 2019 – a delay that will mean a venue change for the Rugby World Cup planned to be held at the new stadium earlier that year.
