Voters in San Diego have rejected a plan to use hundreds of millions of tax dollars for a new stadium for the Chargers, reports The New York Times. The result leaves plans to keep the team in San Diego in doubt – the owners of the Chargers must now weigh up a number of different options, including financing the new stadium themselves, seek an alternative site, or take up the option to share the new Los Angeles home of the Rams, which is currently being spearheaded by Stan Kroenke.
In a statement to fans, Chargers owner Dean Spanos announced that no decision is likely to be taken quickly: “In terms of what comes next for the Chargers, it’s just too early to give you an answer. We are going to diligently explore and weigh our options, and do what is needed to maintain our options, but no decision will be announced until after the football season concludes and no decision will be made in haste.”
