Voters in Arlington have approved funding for a new ballpark for the Texas Rangers, reports TR Sullivan at MLB.com.
A half-cent sales and hotel/motel tax will continue, raising the city’s share of the new facility’s US$1bn price tag. The city will contribute US$500m, with the balance coming from the Rangers. The new ballpark, which will be built to the south of the team’s existing Globe Life Park, will feature a retractable roof, which will enable the venue to be air-conditioned.
The next step, Sullivan reports, will be to select an architect and general contractor for the new ballpark. Construction is planned to begin in 2018/2019, with a projected opening day in 2020.
