Signify to light up the action in Russia

Signify, formerly Philips Lighting, will be one of the biggest players at this year’s FIFA World Cup soccer tournament after it announced that it is providing on- and off-pitch lighting to 10 of the 12 stadia used at the championships.

Of particular note is the Ekaterinburg Arena, which has undergone recent renovations and will benefit from Signify’s state-of-the-art LED lighting system illuminating the pitch in front of 35,000 fans when it hosts matches in Groups A, C, F and H.

The system is said to offer a greater quality of light ideal for 4K TV broadcasts and UHDTV super slow-motion replays, as opposed to old generation lighting systems that would cause a flickering effect on the television picture. The system also has the ability to be controlled and synced to music for venues to host entertainment and pre-game shows.

“We have more than 80 years of experience in lighting sports events and are recognized as the world leader in sports illumination,” said Sergey Karpov, head of sport lighting of Signify in Russia.

“Through these installations, fans and television viewers around the world will enjoy their favorite game while soccer players on the field will get the optimum visibility.”

Other venues that will feature Signify lighting include the Luzhniki Stadium – the centerpiece stadium of the event, which will host the final – as well as the Krestovsky Stadium, Fisht Stadium in Sochi, Kazan Stadium, Rostov Arena, Kaliningrad Stadium, Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, Volgograd Arena and Samara Arena.

In addition to supplying pitch lighting, Signify’s solutions can also be seen on the exterior of Luzhniki Stadium (top) where a 419,700ft² LED media roof is installed to light up the façade of the building to create light shows before and after games.
