Veltins Arena upgrades to LED lighting system

The Veltins Arena, home to Bundesliga soccer side FC Schalke 04, will be hosting home matches under new lights following the announcement that it will be installing a new LED system this summer.

The venue owners went through an extensive process of vetting several LED floodlight manufacturers before selecting Musco’s Total Light Control system – a custom-designed setup that is said to improve visibility on the pitch, while also saving energy and enhancing HD broadcast quality.

Tailored precisely to the venue’s specifications it uses custom optics on the LEDs, which offers more even distribution of light than the existing floodlights that have been in use for over 15 years.

Through this uniformity and its multi-zone orientation and aiming, it reduces harsh shadows on the pitch. It also features patented baffles on the luminaries that are said to eliminate glare from players and spectators.

Aside from soccer, the new lighting system is also being viewed as a chance to deliver light shows for other events such as music concerts. Featuring DMX controls integration each individual light fixture can synchronize to music to produce special effects.

The Veltins Arena, which was opened in 2001 has hosted major sporting events such as the UEFA Champions League final and matches at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Should Germany be successful in its bid to host Euro 2024, the arena will be once again selected to host games with the new LED lighting setup meeting UEFA Elite A lighting standards.
