Wells Fargo Center in US$250m renovation plan

The Wells Fargo Center, home to the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers and NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers, will undergo a US$250m upgrade plan over the next three years as its owners Comcast Spectacor bid to secure the venue’s future as a venue for major sporting events and concerts.

The ownership group announced it was given approval to carry out improvements over three phases (one each summer) that will result in renovating its suites and premium seating, as well as widening its concourses, introducing more food and beverage concessions, installing new digital displays and laying new flooring.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Comcast Spectacor will open up two lounges by knocking down walls on the southeast and northeast corners, adding about 7,000ft2 where fans can drink and talk. The report also claims that by 2020, court-side and rink-side suites will have been built and 21,000 seats at the Wells Fargo Center replaced. The number of luxury suites – currently 126 – is also expected to be reduced.

The option to demolish the venue and rebuild was discussed by the ownership group, but it was estimated that it would cost US$750m.
