Everett Mayor surprises city with announcement of new stadium

The city of Everett, Massachusetts, will be welcoming a brand new state-of-the-art stadium and multipurpose recreational site that will sit on a 10.5 acre area along the Malden River, it was announced at Mayor Carlo DeMaria Jr’s inaugural address.

Following lengthy discussions regarding a new stadium Mayor DeMaria publicly gave the green light to construct the venue, which will consist of an artificial turf stadium that will replace the current Everett Veterans Memorial Stadium, currently used for football and baseball.

The project, which is expected to cost approximately US$20m and will be located in a different part of the city to the existing facility, will also feature a recreational area consisting of a multi-purpose soccer field, full-length track, tennis courts, play areas and a Riverwalk.

Further detail of the venture such as capacity and dates have not yet been revealed, however Mayor DeMaria claimed the new stadium would be the “centerpiece” of the project and would help rectify current issues of the historic Veterans Memorial Stadium, such as the lack of parking for fans.

“This new facility will highlight and commemorate the strong tradition of our champion athletes and preserve the World War II honor wall from the old stadium,” said DeMaria.

“This stadium will be part of a larger, top-of-the-line, recreational space made possible in part by our partnership with Wynn Resorts, who are building a new playground in this area in exchange for the opportunity to redevelop the underutilized Lynde playground.”

Everett is the home of the Everett High and its Crimson Tide football team – a highly successful program who are the current Division 1 national champions and have won the title 12 times over the past 25 years.

The team currently plays games at the recently renovated Everett Memorial Stadium, which has a capacity of 12,000 for football, but will move to new its new home should the plans get final approval by the Everett City Council.
