Pontiac Silverdome finally demolished after failed first attempt

They don’t make them like they used to. It took two attempts for the Pontiac Silverdome, the former home of the NFL’s Detroit Lions, to bite the dust. Still standing after the first implosion, it was finally demolished by a second blast to the upper section of the stadium, which has stood in Michigan since 1975

With this in mind, should designers of new stadia, or project managers of renovations, be looking at both on-field and off-field lighting as part of a single solution?

Seattle Mariners’ Safeco Field named ‘greenest stadium’ in MLB

Major League Baseball’s Seattle Mariners has been recognized for its efforts in sustainability and zero-waste initiatives at Safeco Field after receiving the 2017 Green Glove Award.

It was announced the club leads the league with diverting the highest rate of waste from area landfills with a 96% diversion rate during the 2017 season – up from 90% in 2016.

The Mariners executed a number of eco initiatives and practices at the stadium to win the award including replacing standard garbage cans with compost and recycling bins on concourses, while cleaning crews are instructed to separate plastics and compostable waste after each game.

Also, since 2013, Safeco Field has utilized Eco-Products as the provider for its serviceware resulting in nearly everything used by fans on game days being 100% recyclable or compostable. From soft drink cups to beer cups, coffee cups, plates, trays, spoon, forks and knives – the effort to achieve a zero-waste goal has seen the organization land the top honor.

“We have worked hard over the years to make Safeco Field one of the ‘greenest’ ballparks in pro sports. With the help of all our sustainability partners, we have been able to significantly reduce our impact on the environment. Thanks to Major League Baseball for recognizing these efforts with this great honor,” said Trevor Gooby, Seattle Mariners senior vice president, Ballpark Operations.
