Pontiac Silverdome finally demolished after failed first attempt

They don’t make them like they used to. It took two attempts for the Pontiac Silverdome, the former home of the NFL’s Detroit Lions, to bite the dust. Still standing after the first implosion, it was finally demolished by a second blast to the upper section of the stadium, which has stood in Michigan since 1975

With this in mind, should designers of new stadia, or project managers of renovations, be looking at both on-field and off-field lighting as part of a single solution?

MCG bowled over with appointment of new turf manager

The responsibility of looking after the cricket pitches at the MCG will be in the hands of a new head curator, as Matthew Page, former Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA) turf manager, takes the role.

Page will replace David Sandurski, who has returned to Brisbane as head curator at the Gabba, and will bring more than 20 years’ experience of turf wicket preparation and turf management to one of Australia’s most revered cricket grounds.

During his time working as turf manager for the WACA, Page was instrumental in the construction and maintenance of portable pitches soon to be used at the new Perth Stadium. He also managed the ground operations at the WACA Ground and Murdoch University Playing Fields and will now relocate to Melbourne to start the new role in the New Year.

“We are delighted to have secured the services of Matthew Page for such an important role at the MCG,” said MCC CEO Stuart Fox.

“Matthew is highly regarded in the cricket industry and has extensive experience in preparing first-class cricket pitches.”

Page’s love of turf began as a 14-year-old work experience student at the WACA and grew into seeing him oversee one of the game’s most famous wickets.

“I’m excited about this opportunity to work at one of Australia’s premier stadia across multiple sports… it’s been an exciting journey to date and I’m really looking forward to what the future holds,” said Page.
