Revamped PalaTrento arena utilizes new Thorn lighting system

Lighting developer Thorn Lighting has delivered a new lighting system for a multipurpose sports arena in the Italian city of Trento. The company’s Altis Sport LED floodlights provide illumination for a range of matches and sporting events at the venue, which is home to the Aquila Basket Trento basketball team and Trentino Volley volleyball club.

The multipurpose arena, which has reopened following a renovation project, can accommodate 4,360 spectators and will be further expanded to offer seating for 5,000 fans. This extensive renovation project has included refurbishment of the flooring, renewal of the seating area and a completely new lighting system.

Plans for the lighting system focused on designing a modern system that would minimize energy consumption and maximize lighting quality. Thorn’s aim for the project was to combine compliance and excellent efficiency with first-class lighting quality for both competitive matches and regular training.

A thorough product-selection process opted for Thorn’s Altis Sport technology, a high-power LED floodlight for sports lighting applications. Altis Sport provides flicker-free lighting, which is suitable for HDTV broadcasting, and features a flexible optical system that crafts an optimized lighting distribution.

A total of 92 symmetrical and asymmetrical floodlights can achieve lighting levels of up to 3,400 lx, while a DMX system enables full individual control of dimming and directional positioning.

The new lighting system replaces a previously used conventional discharge lamp setup. The different luminaire sizes and varying lighting intensities previously used meant that the arena was unable to guarantee the achievement of regulatory standards required for high-level international competitions.

The new lighting system is the result of collaboration between Thorn and team members such as Teknoengineering, a long-term partner of the Zumtobel Group.
