Are large operational groups with multiple stadia and arenas in their portfolios doing enough to address sustainability issues, or should the onus lie with individual venues to reduce their environmental footprint?

Dutch simulation software used in Russia

INCONTROL has announced that it has won an important contract during a tender in Russia. The contract includes a simulation study of pedestrian flows for the new Zenit Stadium in St. Petersburg, one of the main stadia of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The study will examine the safety of visitors during events and evacuations.

Accessibility is another important part of the study. Existing vehicle flow, public transport lines and intersections will be modelled in the software to see if the current infrastructure is capable. Where improvements need to be made, the software can also be used to test different scenarios by adjusting the model.

Simulating pedestrian flows is not new but has gained ground over the past few years. The most important reason is that safety and security of visitors has become one of the main issues during large-scale events and during the construction of stadiaand other complex infrastructures. Simulation software gives insight into pedestrian flows and possible bottlenecks in the modelled situation. INCONTROL uses its own software Pedestrian Dynamics for this.

INCONTROL was introduced into Russia by its partner Amsterdam ArenA Advisory. Amsterdam ArenA Advisory shares knowledge by giving training throughout the world about subjects such as the development of new stadia. The mixture of experience and technology ensures synergy between both parties and this resultated in the winning bid for the Russian tender.

The new 68,000-capacity Zenit Stadium is due to open in 2015.
