AEG to manage CONSOL Energy Center

AEG Facilities and the Pittsburgh Penguins have signed a five-year agreement in which the AEG will manage Consol Energy Center, home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins, effective 1 September 2012.

CONSOL Energy Center, which seats 18,837 for hockey and up to 20,000 for concerts and other events, opened in 2010 and in its first year, was named the best new major concert venue at the 22nd Annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards. Last month, it was ranked 41st worldwide and 18th in the US in Pollstar’s 2012 mid-year rankings, recognising the Top 100 arenas for concert and show ticket sales. In June, Venues Today ranked CONSOL Energy Center number 10 in the world in concert and event gross revenue.

“We are excited to create this dynamic partnership with AEG Facilities and look forward to building on the success CONSOL Energy Center has enjoyed in its first two years of operation,” says Travis Williams, chief operating officer of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In the heart of Pittsburgh, the CONSOL Energy Center is home to the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Arena Football League’s (AFL) Pittsburgh Power. It is the first NHL and AFL arena in the US to receive a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification from the US Green Building Council, exceeding nationally-accepted standards for design, construction and operation of green buildings.

In addition to hockey and arena football, the venue hosts more than 150 events per year, including Division I NCAA basketball, concerts, family shows and other special events. Recently, the venue hosted the 2012 NHL Draft and the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament 2nd and 3rd rounds. Later this year, the arena will host American Idol, Rush, Justin Bieber and Carrie Underwood, to name a few. Next spring, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four will be held at CONSOL Energy Center, marking the first-ever NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey championship to be held in the state of Pennsylvania.
