Arena Villeurbanne-Lyon project progresses

Société De Projet Salle Multifonction (SPSM) has made a series of announcements relating to the advancement of the Arena Villeurbanne-Lyon project, including the release of preliminary images of a new proposed 13,000-seat indoor multi-purpose arena, together with the Tony Parker Academy, that is expected to open in Villeurbanne, France, in April 2015.

The project will be developed in partnership with the City of Villeurbanne, a suburb of France’s second-largest market, Lyon, and Grand Lyon, which is the regional government encompassing Lyon and several other major suburban communities. Grand Lyon is located in Region Rhone-Alps, the fifth-largest regional economic area in Europe.

SPSM previously announced that it had retained Global Spectrum Europe, a collaboration of the United Kingdom’s NEC Group and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-based Global Spectrum, to provide ongoing consultation and, ultimately, to operate the arena. Global operates more than 100 public assembly venues worldwide. The building design was completed by architect Gensler & Associates International.

The facility will offer a high level of flexibility that will allow the arena to change from a concert to a hockey configuration within only a few hours. In all configurations, close proximity from the seating areas to the events “will give us the opportunity to preserve the specific atmosphere of Astroballe for the basketball games”, said Gilles Moretton, owner of ASVEL, the professional basketball team that will play at the arena.

There will also be a large range of products for general public and business seating, with 18 suites dedicated to hospitality, a variety of food and beverage venues, spacious concourses for patrons to circulate and socialise, and a range of customer amenities.
