Innovative renovation

Brazil's Morumbi stadium is undergoing an extensive modernisation project that will increase the venue's flexibility, improve safety and increase spectator comfort

Although it will not be one of the 2014 World Cup stadia, the Morumbi stadium in São Paulo, Brazil remains a national icon. Well known and admired by football fans, the venue has played host to a number of decisive matches and huge concerts since it opened in 1960.

With distinctive 1950s’ Brutalist architecture and extensive use of reinforced concrete, the privately financed stadium has greatly contributed to the success of its owner – São Paulo FC – over the past 50 years. However, in order to increase revenue generation and meet modern demands for flexibility, as well as new comfort and safety regulations, the stadium required modernisation. The owners wanted to be able to serve and target a new type of spectator, with a focus on hospitality and services, such as parking facilities and catering.

Led by the development of a completely new roof, the architectural renovation is being designed by Arena - Consulting, Design, Feasibility. The design involves the creation of ‘Arena 25’, a unique space behind one of the goal lines. Adopting the horseshoe format of the stands, this area will become a completely enclosed amphitheatre with a capacity for 25,000 spectators. The back of the area will comprise a complex fabric curtain, structured with a steel frame and cables, which will enable optimum acoustic isolation, while complying with fire and emergency regulations.

The project is proving to be a complex multidisciplinary challenge, involving architecture, acoustics, structure, crowd flow, pitch treatment, and sophisticated systems and facilities in a historically listed building. To further complicate matters, the club needs to retain use of the stadium during part of the construction schedule.

Plans are currently being finalised, and construction is scheduled to begin in June 2013, with completion slated for December 2014.
