Inside Selhurst Park redevelopment plans

Last week, English Premier League club Crystal Palace announced plans to redevelop its Selhurst Park stadium. The club has also released a video, detailing the expansion project, which will see the venue’s capacity increase from 26,000 seats to more than 34,000.

Pontiac Silverdome finally demolished after failed first attempt

They don’t make them like they used to. It took two attempts for the Pontiac Silverdome, the former home of the NFL’s Detroit Lions, to bite the dust. Still standing after the first implosion, it was finally demolished by a second blast to the upper section of the stadium, which has stood in Michigan since 1975

With this in mind, should designers of new stadia, or project managers of renovations, be looking at both on-field and off-field lighting as part of a single solution?

Building strong bones

Odis R. Sutterfield Jr., vice president of Bemo USA Corporation, describes the most recent innovations in the enclosure industry, working on the New Doha International Airport in Qatar and why Chase Field is his favourite stadium in the world

What services does your company offer to the industry?
Bemo is a full service organisation providing engineered structural standing seam and custom application wall assemblies. We engineer, manufacturer and install exterior metal assemblies from our operations, which are located on five different continents.

Could you tell us an interesting fact about your company?
We offer tested, engineered roof and wall assemblies in stainless steel, copper, zinc, aluminium and galvanised steel.

What trends do you see emerging in your particular sector of the stadium industry?
We see owners looking for high quality, long term, low lifecycle cost enclosure assemblies.

Can you tell us about a recent success story for your company?
While not a stadium venue, we are in our fifth year of construction on the stainless steel roof and wall assembly of the New Doha International Airport in Qatar. Consisting of over 300,000m2 of stainless steel material, this project sets a new standard in both size and complexity.

What are the biggest challenges you’re facing in your particular sector of the industry – and how are you overcoming them?
The biggest challenge is having contractors continue to value engineer to cheaper assemblies, which puts immediate money in their pocket but does a long-term disservice to the owner.

What new technologies or strategies have you used in any recent projects?
Working with photovoltaic systems as well as the high performance Bemo-Flon coatings, we are bringing state-of-the-art applications to the enclosure industry.

What’s your favourite stadium/sports venue and why?
Chase Field in Phoenix is one of my favourite venues since the roof and walls open up and you can feel like you are at an outdoor venue while having the comforts of an enclosed facility. It is also one of the only stadia I know of that has a swimming pool in the outfield seating area.

Where do you see the stadium market in 10 years’ time?
World Cup and Olympic venues being built over the next several years in Brazil and Qatar will bring many opportunities. We believe that we are well positioned specifically in Doha, Qatar and Sao Paulo, Brazil with engineering, manufacturing and installation personnel based in both places. We continue to see a trend towards more innovative designs and uses of more environmentally friendly materials.

Bemo USE Corporation will be exhibiting at Stadia Design & Technology Expo 2012, 8-10 May 2012. Visit the company at Booth 1022.
