Inside Selhurst Park redevelopment plans

Last week, English Premier League club Crystal Palace announced plans to redevelop its Selhurst Park stadium. The club has also released a video, detailing the expansion project, which will see the venue’s capacity increase from 26,000 seats to more than 34,000.

Pontiac Silverdome finally demolished after failed first attempt

They don’t make them like they used to. It took two attempts for the Pontiac Silverdome, the former home of the NFL’s Detroit Lions, to bite the dust. Still standing after the first implosion, it was finally demolished by a second blast to the upper section of the stadium, which has stood in Michigan since 1975

With this in mind, should designers of new stadia, or project managers of renovations, be looking at both on-field and off-field lighting as part of a single solution?

University of Florida signs paperwork for renovations to athletics venue

Latest construction milestone means that building work on the University of Florida renovation project could begin before the end of the year

The University of Florida has put pen to paper for The Stephen C. O’Connell Center renovation project after construction authorization paperwork has been filed with contractor Brasfield & Gorrie. The US$64.5m renovation is a partnership between the University of Florida and the University Athletic Association.

The milestone follows the beginning of the design process in July 2014, and paves the way for building to begin. Construction fences will begin going up as early as October, though the O’Connell Center will remain fully operational until the overhaul begins in Spring 2016.

The improvements involved will provide students, fans, alumni and patrons with a dramatically new experience. The renovation includes a seating bowl update, the addition of premium seating areas, installation of a state-of-the-art center-hung scoreboard, upgrades to team spaces and an enhanced concourse.

The renovation is scheduled to be completed in time for UF’s Fall semester commencement in December 2016. The O’Connell Center lies at the heart of the campus, which makes it easily accessible and a vital part of student life. A new construction was judged to have been costlier and would have involved moving to a new location that didn’t enjoy many of the benefits offered by the existing site.
